What Happens During the Veneers Procedure

If you have ever felt self-conscious about your smile, you owe it to yourself to ask your cosmetic dentist about veneers. Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells bonded to the fronts of your teeth that show when you smile or talk. Compared to other tooth restorations, dental veneers are an affordable smile makeover.

If you wish to improve the appearance of your smile, continue reading to learn what happens during the veneers procedure. Our Gahanna dentist at Pure Dental recommends scheduling a consultation with our dentist.

Consultation with Cosmetic Dentist

If you are serious about restoring your smile, your first step is to schedule a consultation with your cosmetic dentist. During the consultation, your dentist will go over your options to help you achieve your best smile.

Dental veneers are able to restore:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Irregularly-shaped teeth

Keep in mind that porcelain veneers are best for front teeth with minor damage or discoloration. For example, a crown may be better suited for a tooth made fragile after a large dental filling or root canal. Your dentist will help you understand all your options so you can make the best choice for your smile.

Teeth are Prepped for Veneers

The first step in the veneers process is to prepare your front teeth. Since veneers sit on top of your teeth, your dentist will need to remove enough enamel so the tooth restorations don’t make your teeth look large or bulky. While most people don’t experience pain when enamel is removed, you may ask your dentist for local anesthesia if you experience any dental pain or discomfort.

Once your teeth are prepped, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and send them to the lab where your veneers will be made. Your new veneers will be ready in about one to two weeks. In the meantime, your dentist will place temporary veneers over your teeth to protect your smile.

Veneers are Bonded to Teeth

When you come back for your second appointment, your dentist will have your dental veneers ready. However, before bonding them to your teeth, they will make sure that the veneers are the right color, shape, and size for your smile. Don’t be alarmed if your dentist has to make slight alterations to your veneers. This is a normal part of the process to make sure you are receiving a custom fit that will last for years to come.

Once your dentist is satisfied with how your cosmetic veneers look, they will clean, polish, and etch the fronts of the receiving teeth. That way, the veneers will be able to bond strongly to your teeth. Once the veneers are bonded, your dentist will check your bite before sending you home with your new smile.
